AMS Member Profile ~ Ken Horner ~
Ken Horner is a life long wood worker, having learned from his father and grandfather. He lives in Morgan Hill, California and is president of the South Valley Woodworkers and VP of the South Bay Woodworkers.
Ken earned a BA (major in Combined Science, minors in Journalism and Philosophy, 1957) from Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico and a MS degree (Organic Chemistry, 1959) from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. Ken worked as a bench chemist in the Medicinal Chemistry Department of Merck Sharp & Dohme Pharmaceuticals in West Point, Pennsylvania and in the Life Sciences and Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department for Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, California. Ken started Horner Associates Consulting in 1970 to show drug and chemical companies how to use a computer to store and retrieve three-dimensional chemical structures. He founded D. P. Index Co. in 1972 to gather and disseminate data on companies with D. P. departments. He ran this company until he retired in 1999.
Ken has been doing marquetry since 1961. He is still active in the craft, teaching classes to beginners and conducting workshops for advanced students at his home shop in Morgan Hill, California. He is the president of the American Marquetry Society and president of the Northern California Chapter of the AMS.
Ken also is the author of three very successful wood-working books: Woodworkers’ Essentials - Facts, Formulas & Short-Cuts (2003), More Woodworkers’ Essentials (2006) and The Essential Guide to the Steel Square (2009). Ken just recently authored Basic Marquetry and Beyond (2015, Linden Press) which is getting good reviews.
