"Who's Who"
in the AMS

The AMS
2008 Marquetry Show
will be held on

Sept 24 – Oct 16, 2008

At the:
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library
150 E San Fernando St
San Jose, California

In cooperation with the AMS, The NorCal Marquetarians will sponsor the 2008 Marquetry Show. It will be held at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in downtown San Jose, California - the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area.

The show will be open to the public during normal library hours from September 24th until October 16 when the show ends. It is not only an opportunity to see exceptional marquetry but an opportunity to purchase selected pieces. Sales will not take place at the show, but we will provide a means for the artist to become aware of an interested buyer. Items must remain at the show until October 16th. The marquetry will be returned to the artist who will be responsible for consummating the sale.

AMS members (only) may submit up to 3 works of marquetry for inclusion in the show. Marquetry must be submitted together with a completed entry form and must arrive between August 15 and September 1, 2008. Entry forms were mailed out with the Summer 2008 newsletter. In case you have misplaced yours, you can print a new copy from the form from the pdf file here.

People's Choice - This year gallery visitors may vote on their favorite pieces. Andreas Strieve, owner of Gallery M, has donated $200 which will be divided between the First, Second and Third place winners at the end of the Show.

If you plan to attend the show there will be a Main Activity Day on Saturday September 27, 2008

Post-event – Sunday September 28, 2008

Self-Guided Tour - Palace of the Legion of Honor Museum, San Francisco.

The Legion of Honor holds one of the finer collections of historic French marquetry outside of Paris. The only other collections of similar quality in the US are in New York and Los Angeles. There are over 20 works by famous individuals, including Boulle, Oeben, & Roentgen, plus you will see the marquetry in conjunction with competing styles of furniture embellishment (such as Japanese lacquer, woodcarving, etc.) giving a heightened appreciation of the work accomplished in the heyday of marquetry.

Entry to the museum is $10 ($7 for seniors); parking is free. In addition to marquetry there are many exhibits in the museum. The museum is close to the Golden Gate Bridge and only a short drive from Fisherman’s Wharf and downtown San Francisco. There will be suggestions of other attractions in the handouts.

If you plan to attend, contact Dave Peck (phone/email below) not later than September 1st, 2008, to receive: (1) A map to the museum, (2) A museum brochure, (3) an article by Dave Peck with details on what to look for at the museum, (4) a list of other people who have signed up and (5) an AMS name tag to be worn in the museum so we can identify each other. You can come and go as you please but a 10:30am arrival time is suggested so that we can view and discuss the marquetry together.

You can contact any of the AMS Officers below if you have any questions or concerns about anything to do with the 2008 Marquetry Show.
